Voltage Security Co-Founder and CTO, Guido Appenzeller, Named Top Young Innovator by Technology Review Magazine

Palo Alto, CA—September 20, 2004---Voltage Security, Inc., a leading provider of secure business communication solutions, today announced that Guido Appenzeller, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Voltage, has been named to the 2004 list of the world’s 100 Top Young Innovators by TechnologyReview, MIT’s Magazine of Innovation.  The TR100, chosen by the editors of Technology Review and an elite panel of judges, consists of 100 individuals under age 35 whose innovative work in technology has a profound impact on today’s world.

Appenzeller was chosen for his contribution to the founding of Voltage Security and for his research as a doctorate candidate at Stanford University. Voltage Security’s award-winning secure business communication solutions are based on Identity-Based Encryption (IBE), a simple alternative to PKI which secures content and messaging with the use of a common identity, such as an email address. Voltage was founded in 2002 by Appenzeller, Matt Pauker and Rishi Kacker, also previously Stanford students, and Dr. Dan Boneh, professor at Stanford and a director of Voltage. Appenzeller is also being awarded his Ph.D. by the Stanford University Computer Science Department for his research in advanced router and networking technology.

“We are extremely proud of Guido; winning this prestigious award is truly a significant achievement,” said Sathvik Krishnamurthy, CEO of Voltage. “This award reflects Guido’s ongoing commitment to finding the synergy between new technology and business opportunity. Guido’s leadership as CTO of Voltage  continues to help guide us in the development of innovative solutions for our customers.”

"Guido continues the Stanford tradition of successful start-ups that are built on ground-breaking new technology developed in the computer science department. We are proud of his contributions and are honored by his inclusion in the TR100,” said Hector Garcia-Molina, chairman, Department of Computer Science, Stanford University.

"The School of Engineering at Stanford prides itself on its world-class
research and the entrepreneurial prowess of our students.  We are delighted at the
recognition of Guido Appenzeller as someone who excels in both research and innovation. We have no doubt that he will continue to do so,” said Nick McKeown, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Stanford University.
