Washington
D.C., Government Security Conference—May
24, 2005
Voltage Security, Inc.,
a global leader in enterprise privacy management for
digital business communication, today announced it has
received FIPS 140-2 Level 1 certification of the Voltage
IBE Cryptographic Module 2.0, part of the Voltage IBE
Toolkit which is freely available for download at http://developer.voltage.com. FIPS
validation for the Voltage IBE Toolkit enables Voltage
and other software developers to build applications that
meet government FIPS requirements. As part of its support
for developers, Voltage also unveiled today the Voltage
blog at http://superconductor.voltage.com.
Voltage’s FIPS 140-2 certification, awarded by the
National Institute of Standards (NIST), specifically validates
the following algorithms: DES, Triple-DES, AES, DSA, SHA-1
and Random Number Generation. Voltage’s FIPS 140-2
certification is available online at:
http://csrc.nist.gov/cryptval/140-1/140crt/140crt522.pdf.
"Too
often developers have to forego innovative technology because
it hasn't been FIPS certified. Voltage's FIPS 140-2 certified
Toolkit will allow the use of IBE even in environments with
strict compliance requirements. I'm particularly glad to
see that Voltage has made the Toolkit available at no charge,
dramatically lowering the barriers to the deployment of IBE
technology." said Eric Rescorla, independent security
developer and chief scientist at Network Resonance, Inc.
“This
FIPS validation demonstrates Voltage’s commitment to
open cryptographic standards and provides third-party certification
of Voltage’s cryptographic implementations. Developers
can download the Toolkit today and begin writing applications
that are FIPS compliant,” said Guido Appenzeller, CTO
of Voltage.
This
certification also illustrates Voltage’s continued
momentum in addressing government security applications and
follows on its success in the Joint Warrior Interoperability
Demonstration (JWID) 2004 where it was awarded “top
performer” status and nominated as one of only nine
solutions to the Transformation Change Package (TCP) process.

About
Identity-Based Encryption (IBE) and the Voltage IBE Toolkit
Voltage Security products and services feature an award-winning,
breakthrough technology called Identity-Based Encryption,
or IBE. IBE was first proposed in 1984 by Adi Shamir,
co-inventor of the widely-used RSA encryption algorithm. Shamir
suggested that using common identities, such as an email
address, directly as keys would greatly simplify the management
and usability of cryptographic software. After 17 years,
Professors Dan Boneh of Stanford University (co-founder of
Voltage Security) and Matthew Franklin of University of California,
Davis developed the first efficient and practical IBE system. Their
algorithm, known as Boneh-Franklin IBE, enables an architecture
for encrypting information without the need for certificates
and complex infrastructure. Since the publishing of
their original paper on IBE, more than 200 academic papers
have been written on the subject of IBE and related technologies.
The practical application of Voltage IBE results in a solution
that is:
- Easy to implement and easy to manage – eliminates
the overhead and costs inherent in traditional security
solutions such as PKI
- Highly scalable – no storage of keys or messages,
and no need to contact online servers; allows the solution
to scale dramatically without the need for additional infrastructure
- Easy to use – no need for end users to worry about
keys or certificates
The Voltage IBE Toolkit, available since February 2005,
leverages the benefits of Voltage IBE to secure data quickly
and easily. Applications built using the Toolkit seamlessly
integrate with the Voltage Enterprise Privacy Management
Platform™ and take advantage of its centralized administration,
advanced policy management capability and key distribution
architecture. The Voltage IBE Toolkit also enables new Voltage
IBE applications to integrate easily with existing Voltage
applications including award-winning Voltage SecureMail™,
Voltage SecureFile™, Voltage SecurePolicy Server™ and
Voltage IBE Gateway Server™.
Voltage Support for Developers
Toolkit developers are supported by the Voltage Technology
Alliance Partner program which is designed to help
corporate partners, developers and independent software vendors
(ISV’s) bring Identity-Based Encryption (IBE) solutions
to market more quickly by providing comprehensive technical
and tactical business support as needed.
Voltage IBE Toolkit development partners include CipherTrust,
Fujitsu, Gemplus and IMLogic.
