Voltage Security Sets New Standard for
Security and Usability of Secure Email
New Voltage SecureMail™ Features Innovations for Clientless Secure Messaging, Customized Branding for Enterprise Customers and Enhanced Policy-Based Encryption
Palo Alto, CA – November 1, 2005– Voltage Security, Inc., a global leader in enterprise privacy management, today announced new innovations for removing complexity from encryption and secure messaging. After pioneering the concept of encryption simplicity with Voltage IBE™ (Identity-Based Encryption), Voltage once again pushes usability to the next level by providing fully enterprise-customizable secure messages that offer a rich, branded experience for end users. Unlike other email encryption offerings based on traditional technologies such as PKI (public key infrastructure), the new Voltage Zero Download Messenger™ provides a completely clientless experience with absolutely no requirement for downloads of any kind; no applets, clients, scripts or any other type of code are downloaded with the Voltage-delivered secure message. This enables banks, insurance companies, healthcare institutions, and customer service organizations to securely push information and foster two-way communication directly with their customers and business partners easily and without creating unacceptable end-user complexity.
These significant feature enhancements to Voltage SecureMail are designed to maximize end-user experience and include the ability to add branding elements to encrypted email, enhanced rules-based encryption functionality in the Voltage SecureMail Gateway™ and Voltage SecureMail Desktop™, and extensive audit and log capability to meet compliance requirements. In addition, the Voltage SecureMail solution has been enhanced to provide OpenPGP and S/MIME interoperability, enabling secure messages to be sent and received using legacy cryptographic protocols. All Voltage products feature the breakthrough cryptographic technology, Identity-Based Encryption.
“Security and usability are inextricably linked. Without usability there is no way to ensure security. Voltage SecureMail, with Identity-Based Encryption, already offers significant advantages in making secure communication easy-to-use and manage. Now, we take this a step further, providing a highly customized and streamlined user experience, whether end users are receiving messages at their desktops, laptops, via webmail or via mobile devices such as RIM’s BlackBerry® ” said Wasim Ahmad, vice president of marketing, Voltage Security.
“Now our users can deliver highly customized, rich HTML secure email
messages with our own corporate branding elements directly to our customers . This approach completely masks the underlying cryptographic elements and is critical to customer acceptance of secure mail. Voltage has significantly streamlined the whole end-user experience and raised the bar on usability,” said Richard Entrup, Chief Information Officer, Byram Healthcare Centers, Inc.
“Market growth for secure (encrypted) email beyond the enterprise boundary has been hindered by the difficulties of managing cryptographic keys. With improved manageability and ease-of-use, we expect to see continuing adoption of encrypted email by financial institutions, healthcare providers and others to protect personally identifiable information and corporate privacy,” said Victor Wheatman, managing vice president and research area director, Gartner, Inc.
Bell Security Solutions Inc. (BSSI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Bell Canada, supports policy-based encryption as the best way to ensure compliance to privacy regulations across large and growing enterprises. By extending policy capability to include sender, recipient, subject, x-header and confidential flag-based encryption rules, the Voltage SecureMail Gateway becomes even more essential. And, the addition of enhanced audit and log capabilities provide an in-depth view of system information for system administrators.
“These enhancements combine to further make Voltage IBE an ‘industrial strength’ encryption solution. IBE is maturing to meet the needs of the most demanding CIO’s,” said Dan Boneh, associate professor, computer science and electrical engineering, Stanford University; co-founder, Voltage Security.
New Features Focus on Security and Usability
- Completely client-free secure messaging through Zero Download Messenger, ensuring that messages are always received no matter what email system is being used – absolutely no ActiveX, JavaScript, Java applets or other active code.
- Full support for rich-content, HTML emails and easily customizable templates for corporate branding in secure emails.
- Streamlined authentication options, including the new Voltage Enrollment Server designed for B2C end users, ensuring that passwords never need to be sent in the clear.
- Interoperability with legacy encryption protocols such as OpenPGP and S/MIME, and intelligent routing to ensure recipients (including BCC recipients) receive the message in the anticipated format.
- Policy-based encryption at both desktop and gateway, allowing administrators to define rules for mandatory encryption providing online and offline policy enforcement.
- Advanced content-based encryption in combination with leading content scanning technologies, ensuring that compliance policies can drive encryption without the need for end user intervention.
- Comprehensive capture and reporting of critical email-driven business events, including the receipt and reading of messages and attachments by external recipients.
About Voltage IBE
Voltage IBE is a public key cryptography system that uses common identities (such as an email address or screen name) as public keys, eliminating the need for certificates, Certificate Revocation Lists (CRL) and other costly infrastructure. Voltage IBE results in a solution that is easy to implement and easy to manage, without the overhead and cost inherent in traditional security solutions. Voltage IBE is ideal for use with financial services customers and medical patients who expect communication to be kept private and secure and also want ease-of-use and low-cost. Voltage IBE solutions are:
- Easy to implement and easy to manage – eliminates the overhead and costs inherent in traditional security solutions such as PKI
- Highly scalable – no storage of keys or messages, and no need to contact online servers; allows the solution to scale dramatically without the need for additional infrastructure
- Easy to use – no need for end users to worry about keys, certificates or multiple inboxes.
