Are more data breaches due to hacking?
According to the consumeraffairs.com web site, recent data seems to show that more data breaches are now being caused by hacking than we saw in the past. To check if this is really true, I looked at the datalossdb.org database of data breaches. This is probably the best source of information on data breaches, so if there's really a trend, it should also be present there. Here's what I found.
Here's the fraction of data breaches that are due to hacking for the years 2006 through 2010. This seems to show that the fraction was relatively unchanged over those five years.
Now when we add in what we've seen for the first three months of 2011, here's what we get.
So although what's happened in the first three months of 2011 might not continue through the rest of the year, it certainly looks like the fraction of data breaches due to hacking has actually increased recently.
