Why I frequently meet NACS lobbyists

I run into lobbyists for NACS, the National Association of Convenience Stores, fairly often at meetings involving credit card payments technology and security and I just learned why this happens.

According to the 2004 article in Payments Source magazine, "Why Gasoline Retailers Are Fuming" (unfortunate registration required), the cost of credit and debit card transactions are the fourth largest cost for gas stations (after labor, rent and utilities), making store owners very interested in lobbying for regulations that lower the fees that they have to pay.
