A metaphor for Facebook’s record with privacy

In the recent article in The Economist about the benefits of letting children use Facebook there was an interesting metaphor (actually a simile, but I usually get a blank stare from people if I use that term in this context):

Facebook’s record on privacy matters is as chequered as the flag that marks the end of a Formula One race.
