National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2016
Did you know that October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), an annual campaign to raise awareness about cybersecurity? It was created as a collaborative effort between government and industry to ensure every American has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online. This is the 13th year of National Cyber Security Awareness Month. With the number of internet users and connected devices increasing exponentially, HPE Security – Data Security believes it is hugely important to raise awareness of cyber security.
We live in a world that is more connected than ever before. The Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, whether we realize it or not, according to The Homeland Security Website on NCSAM. NCSAM is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives to raise awareness about cybersecurity, provide them with tools and resources needed to stay safe online, and increase the resiliency of the Nation in the event of a cyber incident, says the site.
The consumer-focused Stay Safe Online website is in its sixth year of their STOP. THINK. CONNECT. campaign, and announced NCSAM 2016 will focus on a different cybersecurity issue for each week in October. The issues they want to bring attention to are; The Basic Steps to Online Safety and Security, Creating a Culture of Cybersecurity in the Workplace, Recognizing and Combating Cybercrime, Our Continuously Connected Lives, and Building Resilience in Critical Systems.
In England, cyber security awareness is being promoted by Security Seriously with a special week in the 3rd week of October. Security Serious Week is five days dedicated to helping businesses take security more seriously. Security Serious Week also has gathered over 50 webinars on the hottest topics in cyber security, including this one by HPE’s Reiner Kappenberger.
Webinar: Delivering Data Security with Hadoop and the IoT
The Internet of Things (IoT) is here to stay, driving an explosion of data which offers tremendous opportunity for organizations to gain business value, and Hadoop has emerged as the key component to make sense of the data and realize the maximum value. On the flip side the surge of new devices has increased potential for hackers to wreak havoc, and Hadoop has been described as the biggest cybercrime bait ever created. In this webinar we will discuss some steps to identify what needs protecting and apply the right techniques to protect it before you put Hadoop into production.

There are many ways that you can get involved during National Cyber Security Awareness Month, including;
- Use #CyberAware in all your social media messages during the month of October
- Join the weekly NCSAM 2016 Twitter Chat series on Thursdays in October at 3p.m. EST using #ChatSTC.
- Review and update the acceptable use policy for all technology (computers, mobile devices, networks and personal devices) in your school or office.
- Review Verizon’s Data Breach Investigations Report. By knowing today’s threats, you can better protect your organization tomorrow
Of course, the best way for businesses to practice cyber security awareness and take security seriously is to protect and encrypt sensitive data by using a data-centric approach to data security.
